Dengue in the Kathmandu Valley: when to get tested
Dengue is no longer only a Terai illness. Here is how NS1, IgM and IgG tests work, and when to book one.
Recent monsoon seasons have seen dengue spread well into the Kathmandu Valley. High fever, severe body ache, pain behind the eyes and rash are the typical warning signs.
NS1 antigen (days 1–5)
NS1 is the best test in the first few days of fever, when the virus itself is in the blood.
IgM and IgG antibodies (after day 5)
IgM shows a recent infection; IgG suggests a past one. Together they help your doctor judge the stage of illness.
Platelet count
A falling platelet count is one of the key things doctors watch. A daily CBC may be needed during recovery.
